Practical Radicals podcast launch!
Trailer and Episode 1 about the fundamentals of great strategy are now live
Hi everyone,
Stephanie Luce and Deepak are excited to announce that the Practical Radicals podcast is live wherever you get your podcasts! (Here are the links for Spotify and Apple Podcasts.) Our 13-episode series will come out biweekly and feature leading organizers and academics discussing cutting-edge issues in social change. It builds on key themes in our book, Practical Radicals: Seven Strategies to Change the World.
Our 5-minute podcast trailer gives a preview of what’s to come, and in our first episode, “What is Strategy?,” we and our two guests point the way toward a strategy upgrade for progressives. We talk with Maria Poblet, Executive Director of the Grassroots Power Project, about how the analytical tool known as conjunctural analysis can help us see what openings exist for social change at a particular moment in history. We also interview Columbia political scientist Alex Hertel-Fernandez, who explains how conservative activists deliberately deploy strategies to weaken progressive institutions and sources of power—and reveals what we can learn from them. If you enjoy the show, please subscribe, rate, and write us a review on your podcast app, it helps us get the word out!
The podcast is produced by Harry Hanbury and Peter Coccoma. Our theme music was composed by Christian Perez Yates and performed by Trio Gafas. Additional music in our first episode is by Mike Mangiaracina and Waxwing.
We have lots of other news about Practical Radicals. Stephanie and Deepak recently had a great conversation about the book with Mark and Paul Engler. Published by Dissent and titled “Strategy is a Craft,” it offers a concise overview of many key ideas in the book.
Fortune magazine published an op-ed by Stephanie and Deepak riffing on the themes in the book and exploring the disconnect between the ostensible success of Bidenomics and its lackluster public support.
And James Mumm wrote a generous review of Practical Radicals in Social Policy, which you can read there or on his substack.
We encourage you to check out and use the popular Practical Radicals study guide, which groups are using to explore the ideas in the book together.
Deepak was also recently interviewed by Chris Hayes for his podcast, and that episode will drop in February. We’ll share the link when the episode is up.
The Platypus will continue to publish this year but on an irregular basis. Wishing everyone a joyous and just 2024!
